I have been looking for a drink and draw event for a long time. A couple of folks at the local art guild mentioned a local Dr. Sketchy event held at the Derek Gores gallery. I contacted Derek about the next event and bought tickets the second they were available. Derek has a beautiful gallery in the Eau Gallie Art district, check out his website for a sampling of all of his work here.
For those of you who don’t know what a Dr. Sketchy event is, here’s the basic breakdown. Drawing, drinks and dames. Ok, so whats not to love about this, right!? There are sessions of drawing starting at one minute poses to warm up, then 5 and 10 minute poses for the rest of the evening. The main focus is quick sketch, to work on gesture and telling the story you see in front of you, without getting bogged down in detail. This event was a jungle theme, jaguar included!!
The atmosphere was great, from the music, drinks and awesome people. It really pushed me artistically, since I haven’t been to a life drawing session in some time, shame on me! Capturing gesture and telling a story is one of my favorite things about art, and always makes me strive to be better at what I do.
I kept my supplies limited, a couple of black pens, white gel pen, some warm gray markers and toned paper. I have been practicing quick sketch in pen a lot lately, it forces you to focus more on observing what you are drawing, then the lines you are creating. This focus really helps you figure out and decide the lines that will best tell the story you see in front of you. I have found it to be a very useful practice, give it a shot and let me know what you think!
Check out my sketches from the event here.
I’ll talk more in depth about quick sketch and gesture drawing in another post. It’s a fascinating segment of the art world that needs to be explored and practiced as much as any other discipline.
For more info on Dr. Sketchy events and to see if there is one in your area, check out their website.
And for more about the event in Melbourne, with some cool pics from the evening, check out their FB page.
I’d love to hear your comments, and tell your friends as well! Have you ever been to a Dr. Sketchy event or other drink and draw?
Until next time, keep on drawing.
